The biggest night in fashion, meaning the Met Gala 2024 titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, was the final statement for the vintage business to take off.
This year’s theme was all about fragility and the importance of the designer’s past work, its preservation and its relevance more than ever, this having in mind that archival looks are becoming more and more desired by celebrities and the fashion public in general.
Despite the virality of the event, it’s been notable in general that specially re-selling leather goods has become the main thing for new generations, this linked to sustainability and sometimes being able to afford some brands that became quite unreachable with price increases, and design core changes with the course of the past years; let’s break down three insights on vintage shopping:
- Investment replacing expenses
Notable in Hermès’ Birkin and Kelly bags due to high demand and low stock at retail stores worldwide, waiting lists and actually being chosen by the brand to being able to purchase them directly, the resale market for the French brand takes the first place in this category, because their products increase value within time, being the perfect investment to make nowadays in luxury.
- Nostalgia in archival
Celebrities are pulling out old and back-then “viral” looks from Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel, John Galliano’s Dior Couture collections and Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic records that made a huge impact in fashion in general. This being the main practice by stylists and even for magazine editorials, had created an atmosphere of sentimentality in current luxury buyers connecting them with iconic catwalk moments, supermodels wearing what’s now available for everybody and its connection to legendary designers.
- Sustainable accessibility
New generations are more eager to invest in good quality luxury goods rather than buying disposable fast fashion clothes and bags, and because they care about the world’s state now environmentally, it’s smart for niche luxury vintage shops to offer them competitive prices for high end products that last a lifetime.
The Met Gala might have come to an end of viral status, but it is for sure that thrifting and vintage are here to tear the over-priced fashion game down.
